Muay Thai


When people think of kickboxing there really is one style that stands above the rest; Muay Thai. Originating in ancient Thailand as a form of unarmed combat, Muay Thai evolved from Muay Boran. It survives today in the ring as one of Thailand's premier sporting events. Referred to as "The Science of Eight Limbs" and sometimes "King of the Ring", Muay Thai makes use of eight weapons (hands, legs, knees and elbows) . Focusing on punches, kicks, knees and elbows, Muay Thai is also renowned for it's clinching techniques. The clinch in Muay Thai is a form of grappling that allows positional control to unbalance and opponent or land a strike (generally a knee or elbow) and is one of the unique features of Muay Thai.

With the rise of MMA, the interest in with regard to the striking aspect of Mixed Martial Arts has sky rocketed. Along with Boxing, Muay Thai has seen a resurgence due to it's proven effectiveness. Nearly every notable MMA champion has made it a priority to clean up their technique and have has trained Muay Thai as part of their MMA game. With fighters such as Anderson Silva and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua making use of Muay Thai in their fights, one can easily see its effectiveness in Mixed Martial Arts.
