What is Capoeira?

The exact origin of Capoeira is unknown, however it was probably created from central African martial arts knowledge brought to Brazil in the early days of the slave trade, and then perhaps mixed with the styles of indigenous South American peoples. Originally intended as a form of unarmed resistance to their captors, slaves of the time had to disguise their training as a ritual dance in order to avoid suspicion. Later in history Capoeira became the power base for Brazilian gangs who ruled whole cities with their prowess. This led to laws making the activity illegal. Capoeira survived secretly however, and eventually underwent reforms that led to the modern sporting style. Today it is massively popular in Brazil, Europe, and coastal regions of the U.S. as a game, a form of self-defense, a way to increase fitness, and as a historical treasure. Capoeira is the only Martial Art form created on the American continent that is not derivative of Asian styles.

To behold, Capoeira is truly thrilling. Always played to the percussive music of drums and the Berimbauan instrument unique to Capoeira. A game is played within a circle of people referred to as the Roda. Two players cartwheel out and begin to Ginga. This is the always-moving stance that all moves stem from, and return to. After that anything is possible. Kicks are thrown, usually spinning in multiple high circles and in many varying flavors. Under these kicks the opponent drops back to the floor and begins complex sequences of sweeps, rolls, and counter attacks. In response the first player may have to escape by using any number of gymnastic type avoidances such as cartwheels, back flips, or others. Both players will then return to the Ginga and a new volley of action will ensue.

No physical contact is ever made during a game of Capoeira, with an appropriate attack range being from 6 inches to several feet away from the other player. Thus it is a relatively safe Martial arts practice in comparison to contact sparring and the like. It is however, one of the most demanding Arts in terms of cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. Its emphasis on avoidance rather than blocking makes it one of the best overall survival training methods available. It requires great creativity and physical improvisation since no movement sequences are scripted as in other arts. And most of all its fun! It's a game, and a celebration, full of music and motion.

This Class is open to those ages 12 and up.
